Inpatient Diabetes Management Course

COMING SOON!

Hyperglycemia is one of the most common challenges clinicians face in the hospital, yet management often varies widely between clinicians, services, and shifts. Diabetes Care Academy’s Inpatient Diabetes Management Course is a self-paced, case-based training program that gives hospital-based clinicians a practical, guideline-aligned approach to inpatient diabetes management. The course covers inpatient insulin management, glucose targets, DKA and HHS, hypoglycemia, diabetes technology, perioperative care, and safe transitions from hospital to home.

Why Inpatient Diabetes Management Matters

Patients with diabetes face the risks of hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and related complications across hospital care settings, from the emergency department and critical care to surgical and medical units. Yet inpatient glycemic management is rarely taught in depth, leaving many clinicians to learn it informally through institutional order sets and trial and error. The result is care that varies from service to service and shift to shift.

Common gaps in hospital diabetes care include:

  • Inconsistent insulin dosing and adjustment during the hospital stay
  • Delayed or poorly timed transitions from IV to subcutaneous insulin, including missed basal insulin overlap
  • Under-recognized and preventable inpatient hypoglycemia
  • Incomplete discharge planning that leaves patients unprepared to manage diabetes at home

This course treats inpatient diabetes as the distinct clinical discipline it is, giving clinicians and care teams a consistent, evidence-based framework they can apply on their next shift.

Who Should Take This Course?

The Inpatient Diabetes Management Course is designed for hospitalists, internal medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, inpatient pharmacists, pharmacy residents, medical residents, fellows, hospital-based specialists, and quality leaders who manage diabetes and hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients.

Whether you’re rounding on the wards, managing patients in the ICU, or verifying and adjusting insulin orders, this course is built for you.

Inpatient Diabetes Course Enrollment for Hospitals and Health Systems

Inconsistent inpatient glycemic management is a quality and patient safety issue, not just an education gap. When hospitalists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and trainees learn a shared, guideline-based approach, care can become more consistent across units and shifts. Hospitals and health systems can use this course to support inpatient diabetes and glycemic management teams, hospitalist groups, pharmacy departments, quality and safety teams, residency programs, and clinician onboarding.

Course topics align with many of the areas evaluated by national inpatient quality programs, including the Leapfrog Group and American Diabetes Association Recognized Leader in Caring for People Living with Diabetes designation, such as hypoglycemia protocols, surgical preparation, insulin pump and CGM use, and discharge planning for high-risk patients.
